Part 1 of a 1982 radio interview with New York disc jockey Jonathan Schwartz. This is a revised version with a new video track. Audio remains the same.
i heard that Dionne Warwicke and Burt Bacharch also had a falling out but reconciled
I'm glad Nelson mentioned the issue re:borrowing. alot of people feel like parasites when they borrow
What a wonderful arranger and conductor.
What a great interview. Incredible musician/composer/arranger, and so modest and honest. Loved that he was listening to Ralph Vaughan Williams and other English composers. You can hear the influence in his orchestrations.
"I Gett Along without You Very Well" (Sinatra Arrangement) - the best - priceless - I wish I could hear it with no vocal.
Very interesting pt; eschewing the usual classical suspects 4 the Impressionists .. similar 2 my tastes. His music sometimes had a "cinematic" vibe .. really painted with emotions / sentiments like a painter uses colour. His upbringing explains a sometimes melancholic undertone in his music. Gr8 stuff .. thx heaps 4 posting
'What a 20th Century Nelson S. Riddle Musical Portrait 'When you reflect on all the music ever composed in Human History 'Few can touch "Witchcraft" W/Sinatra alone... (1957) Cy Coleman/Carolyn Leigh
As a sixteen year old cellist, I had the pleasure to perform with him at a concert in Beverly Hills. Bobby Troup and one of Jack Benny's girl violinist was also at it. I didn't know who he was at the time but I have fond memories of his conducting.
I’m reading “September in the Rain” by Peter Levinson. It is a biography of Nelson Riddle, and an incredible read. Mr. Schwartz does a wonderful interview.
Nelson Riddle was one of the best if not the best musical arranger ever.
Nelson Riddle was one of the best musical arrangers ever if not the best ever.
I studied with Dr Albert Harris! Mentioned by Nelson here.
The absolute Rolls Royce Deluxe of popular song orchestra. Genius.
Sinatra, King Cole, Ella, Shirley Bassey: the absolute Rolls Royce Deluxe of popular song orchestra.
A fantastic series! I loved all the old photos. People used to dress so nice.
Here are two of Nelson's own albums mentioned in the above video: *Nelson Riddle - Sea of Dreams (1958)* ruclips.net/p/OLAK5uy_l5PdrqWumZd5YfRsWwOx27eMqxj8ZP-NI *Nelson Riddle - Love Tide (1961)* ruclips.net/p/OLAK5uy_kFDnMS3sS2NbMzTbpcjebpiEE4wi5lHxs
A wonderful audio documentary. Thank you, Doctor Voiceover.
Frank Sinatra, Jr. was incredibly intelligent, astute, and well-spoken. He never seemed happy to me, though. I hope I'm wrong. Rest in peace, Frankie, Jr.
Riddle + Sinatra = Heavenly
Lou Levy was another fabulous LA-based pianist & Nelson S. Riddle was in that Rolls Silver Shadow column of musicians, composers & arrangers at the top of the heap, My Grandparents' home on N. Bronson Ave was barely 3 blocks from Capitol Melrose Studios @5515 Melrose Ave back in the day
'Great interview.! a few years ago I was renting a home on the Calif Coast from Jimmy Rowles's youngest daughter & when She gave me her bus card, I said 'you're not related to Jimmy & Stacy Rowles, are you ?? 'as I caught her dad & sister many times on the LA Jazz club circuit in LA's SFV, 'Small world as they say
I worked for a company based in LA & always had him for the x-mas party. That was Flying Tiger Line, but always noticed he was the arranger that all the singers that l liked was Mr Riddle.
The great Nelson Riddle. The amazing Nelson Riddle. The talented Nelson Riddle. The one and only Nelson Riddle. The Mozart of pop. Never to be forgotten. Rest In Peace. 🙏🏽❤️💐🌷🌹
Thanks for posting this. Some of my other radio documentaries for the BBC are on my RUclips channel, Richard Niles, Radio Richard.
Despite his large volume of beautiful work my favorite ❤ will ALWAYS be the Theme from Route 66. I never tire of it.
True it is outstanding
I agree Jean. I could listen to Route 66 a million times and not get tired of it. I hum it sometimes when I drive down the road. Lol
Such a genius and so missed.
This is genius at work.
Man I´m from Argentina and Last year the record Nice and Easy (Frank Sinatra) was remixed and when I listened it was like heatlh, this happend during the first weeks of this shitty covid 19, I still listening and I started wondering who the fuck wrote this amazing orchestra. RIP Nelson Riddle, what a musician! How we miss this people. Fuck Trap, Fuck reaggeton!
I was lucky enough to join Linda Ronstadt when she had finished the album with Nelson Riddle who I had listened to my entire life and been a giant fan of, as Linda wanted to take the What's New music with Nelson and the orchestra on the road for a tour. Nelson told Linda because the whole album was ballads the music would put everyone to sleep and she should add some uptempo music, perhaps with a vocal group, and I was working in a group in LA called the Step Sisters. We rehearsed and did 5 songs with Linda during the shows plus Desperado for the encore. I would go to the rehearsals and stand in different sections of the orchestra and listen to what his voicings were and actually did some arrangements for the tour which he critiqued before they were added. I did 5 part vocal arrangements (Linda, Liza Edwards, Elizabeth Lamers, Rita Valente and myself) and for the second half of the tour pared it down to 4 (minus Rita). It was a tour and a time that had a great deal of influence on the direction I chose afterwards. Linda and Genevieve gave the group the name Red and the Red Hots which I worked for the next 20 years after the tour. Wonderful inspiring time...
What a privilege you had! Thanks so much for sharing.
I'm almost positive I saw YOU and the group LIVE @ Harrahs in Tahoe or Reno during the tour...Will never forget it! Thank you regardless for your Musicality!!!
👍👍👍👍👍
It takes a special type of creative genius to translate onto paper the approach he has for a particular song. That interpretation can make or break the whole recording. To wit Nelson's very pivotal role in the revival of Mr. Sinatra's career.
Jonathan Shawn's is a real peace of S*#*#T knows almost nothing about SINATRA, SINATRA did not care too much for him, he played songs that were not released to the public , WNEW fired him 😳 😔🇺🇲🇮🇹
When NELSON RIDDLE told SINATRA he wanted to bring in an orgin SINATRA told NELSON RIDDLE "I DON'T GIVE A **** what you use" see what happens (STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT)🇺🇲🇮🇹😏
I know at the end they parted ways but all I can say WHAT A SHAME,bless 🙏 them both.😇🇺🇲🇮🇹
NELSON RIDDLE is only one of the many reasons why FRANK SINATRA still is the best!!!😀🇺🇲🇮🇹👌
Wonderful tribute to the best arranger ever.
Such an opportunity to Produce a full Bio Documentary. Nelson Riddle gave us so much sound clarity and delicious music. Best Arranger Ever! Sammy Nestico is now. ...and Sweets - was The Best Fit on Trumpet! 🌟 Love these Platinum Talents.
Thank you for sharing this. *Nelson Riddle my fav!* *The Man had punch and He could write Swing the BEST, Period!* I adore Sammy Nestico too, he has a Riddle clean clear edge and Swings! He writes for so many, Boston Pops, Quincy Jones's Ghost Writer, arrangements on Dennis Bono's 2nd CD. These men give Vocal Artistd an opportunity to get: *"In the Pocket"!* Love Nelson Riddle! He deserves a full Bio-Documentary.
Armstrong, Sinatra, Holiday, and Nelson Riddle? really? Charlie Parker didn't contribute? Johnny Ray didn't contribute? Chuck Berry didn't contribute? Brian Wilson didn't etc; come on, there's been several major contributors to american popular music over the last 100 years. Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Liberace
Nelson Riddle was a true genius. Frank Sinatra would have went nowhere else without him.
I was so privileged to know and work with Nelson Riddle in the 80's. He also had the greatest sense of humor. With Deepest Respect and Fond Memories,
Great ..Nelson Riddle
That's the only truely good album Johnny Mathis ever did. He should have stuck with Nelson!
I obviously don't own enough Nelson Riddle albums.
Damn!! This is so good!!!
Nelson Riddle is God.
A genius.
This is so cool to listen to! wish there was more
Nelson Riddle forever
